Understanding EFT Tapping: A Gentle Introduction

The first time most people hear about EFT Tapping, they have the same reaction: 'You want me to tap on my face?' I completely understand the scepticism. It sounds, at first glance, a little unusual. But stay with me — because EFT is backed by a growing body of research, and in my years of practice, I have seen it bring about surprisingly rapid and lasting relief from anxiety, stress, trauma, and physical pain.

    What Is EFT Tapping?

EFT — Emotional Freedom Technique — is a therapeutic tool that involves gently tapping on specific points on the body, known as acupressure or meridian points, while focusing on a particular emotional or physical challenge. It draws on principles from both Eastern acupressure and Western psychology, and it is often described as a form of 'psychological acupressure'.

The theory is that negative emotions are caused by disruptions in the body's energy system, and that tapping on meridian points while holding a specific issue in mind helps to restore balance to that energy — reducing the emotional charge around the issue and releasing the distress it causes.

    What Does the Research Say?

Happily, EFT has moved well beyond the realm of anecdote. A growing body of peer-reviewed research has found EFT to be effective for anxiety, PTSD, phobias, depression, and even physical pain. Studies have shown that EFT can significantly reduce cortisol levels — the body's primary stress hormone — after just one session.

    What Can It Help With?

In my practice, I use EFT alongside RTT hypnotherapy for a wide range of challenges, including anxiety and panic, chronic stress, grief and loss, PTSD and trauma, phobias, self-confidence, physical pain, and emotional blocks.

One of the things I love most about EFT is that once you have learned the basic technique, you can use it for yourself — at home, in the moment, whenever you need it. It is gentle, non-invasive, and suitable for almost everyone.
