When Grief Won't Lift: Could Hypnotherapy Help?
Grief is one of the most universal human experiences — and yet, for so many people, it becomes something more than sorrow. It becomes a weight that simply won't shift.
If you have found yourself stuck in grief — unable to fully function, unable to imagine a future, cycling through the same feelings of guilt, anger or despair without relief — you are not broken. But you may need more than time. You may need the right kind of support.
This is where hypnotherapy can make a profound difference.
What Is Hypnotherapy, Really?
Hypnotherapy is not stage hypnosis. There are no swinging watches, no "going under," no loss of control. Clinical hypnotherapy is a deeply relaxed, focused state — similar to that feeling just before sleep, when your conscious mind quietens and your subconscious becomes more receptive.
In that state, we can gently work with the thoughts, beliefs and emotional responses that are keeping you stuck. We can begin to process grief at a deeper level than the conscious mind alone can reach.
Why Grief Can Get Stuck
Grief becomes complicated or "stuck" for a number of reasons:
- Unfinished emotional business — things left unsaid, unresolved conflict, guilt or regret that hasn't been processed
- Suppressed emotions — years of keeping it together for others, or being told to "be strong"
- Multiple or layered losses — sometimes one loss opens the door to all the previous ones
- Traumatic bereavement — sudden, unexpected, or violent loss can leave the nervous system in a state of prolonged shock
- Lack of support — grief that has been grieved alone, without a safe space to express it
Hypnotherapy works gently across all of these areas, helping the subconscious mind to process what it has been unable to process on its own.
What a Session Looks Like
Every client is different, and I always begin with a thorough consultation to understand your unique experience of loss. Sessions combine:
- Deep relaxation and guided visualisation to calm the nervous system and create a felt sense of safety
- Therapeutic suggestion tailored to your specific grief patterns
- Parts work, where relevant — gently resolving internal conflict around loss
- EFT (tapping) to release stuck emotional charge from the body
Many clients notice a significant shift in how they feel after just one session. A full programme typically runs over four sessions, though this is always shaped around your individual needs.

- Feel as though your grief has "frozen" or isn't moving
